Ales Brews and Ciders is making quite a splash in the Pune, Kalyani Nagar food scene, with its sprawling space, groovy nightclub, rooftop scenes, and kickass cocktails. They have an in house brewing setup, which should be operational very very soon. Last weekend #TheBTeam was treated to a different side of this chic new lounge pub, getting a glimpse into the beautiful food on offer. Here’s a quick rundown of my experience here.
Tandoori Thecha Mushrooms
For a spice aficionado like me, these were absolute bliss. Grilled mushrooms stuffed with a green chilly thecha chutney – the chef pulled no punches while making the thecha. It is unapologetic-ally hot, and truly burns your lips. But paired with a chilled Bira white, the spice of the chutney is exactly what the doctor ordered to combat the recent drop in temperature. Perfect for a chilled Pune evening.
Five Cheese Pizza
stone grilled pizzas with 5 types of cheeses and basil. A lovely blend of fresh cheese, these thin crust pizzas were absolutely gorgeous! As you pick up a slice, the strand of cheese stretches out – that sight is so drool-worthy.
Pork Overload Pizza
You can never go wrong with bacon, can you? I guess you can. Sadly, this couldn’t hold a candle to its vegetarian cousin above. The pork mince was rather bland, with the chilly oil doing nothing to compliment the dish. Definitely needed some zing to lift up the dish – some tobasco maybe? Or ginger?
Even the generous strips of bacon could do nothing to save this lifeless dish. All we did was lift the bits of bacon off.
Stuffed Mushrooms in Paprika Sauce
These had a gooey cheesy sauce stuffed inside and on top of the mushrooms, with a bite of paprika in it. We just couldn’t get enough of these!
Yep. Its as awesome as it sounds. Maggi rolled into a sushi mat, deep fried, with cheese inside – almost felt like a springroll! We ordered 4 plates of these! Totally worth the carbs 😀
Mutton Seekh Kababs Stuffed with Liquid Cheese
Honestly, I had reservations about this dish. But, surprisingly, this worked brilliantly! The seekh kabab was perfectly spiced, with a hint of chilly coming through, and the cheese, instead of playing truant, blended in with the flavors, lending a delicious twist to this classic dish.
Wasabi coated Prawns Tempura
King sized prawns fried in a tempura batter (crispy, crunchy, yeah!!!) with a thin layer of Wasabi sauce, served with a wasabi mayo and a wasabi dip – the star here is the wasabi – so spicy, it goes straight to the head! Not one for the faint hearted, this one is a super hit!
We were so stuffed, that mains were more of a formality – literally a tasting of what was brought out.
The Kari Kapitan Prawns were delightful. The perfect red curry with coconut milk flavors and generous amount of prawns, served with a burnt garlic fried rice.
The Prawns Malai Curry was equally delicious, if not more. They took the classic bong dish, and amped up the mustard flavor, which ultimately resulted in a tangy, soupy, creamy broth – perfectly paired with a bowl of hot steaming rice!
Brownie with Ice Cream
Do NOT miss the brownie. They bake in-house, and these little cuboids of warm gooey-ness are so good, I literally went ‘bhaad me gaya Keto – bring me one more!’
The Long Island Iced Tea
A shout out to the LIIT here – the main man behind the scene, Mohsin Shaikh, has a history of making a mean LIIT – definitely one that shakes you to your core!
Definitely worth a trip to Kalyani Nagar. #baconbaba khush hua!
